A longliner, ran aground the reef west of Aunuu island last Friday morning.

The #1 Ji Hyun had 7 crew members on board and according to the US Coast Guard all of the crew managed to get off the vessel safely, and walk onto the reef from where they were later picked up.

Frank Thomsen of the US Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Unit said it was sometime between midnight and the early morning hours of Friday that the vessel ran onto the reef.

Two Coast Guard officers from Honolulu arrived Friday night to assist with salvage operations and investigations into how it ended up on the reef.

The Coast Guard says there’s been no fuel discharge from the vessel .

The longliner had been chartered by the American Samoa Power Authority to transport fuel and building supplies to Manu’a. The government vessel MV Sili which usually delivers cargo for Manu’a has been down for more than a month.

Another longliner which ran aground the reef off Coconut Point Nuuuli in May of last year remains there.
