Our performers and artists in Guam got a surprise visit from District Court Judge Elvis Patea early this week.

Judge Patea and Chief Justice Michael Kruse are in Guam for a judicial conference.

Our man in Guam, Doug Tuigamala, says Judge Patea visited with the Faasao Marist High School and brought greetings of our leaders and the people back home for them.

He also conveyed the territory’s pride and thanks for the way they have represented American Samoa at the festival.

More high marks for the students was their contribution to the Memorial Day commemoration in Guam.

Doug reports that the students volunteered to place  more than three thousands flags at the national cemetery before the Memorial Day celebration on Monday.

This was a community service which was coordinated with the Guam Fire Department which is the official host for American Samoa’s delegation at the Festival.

Says Doug: “The students of Faasao & Malisi weren’t under any pressure or demand to go out placing flags at the cemetery. It was out of their own free will as a way to say thank you veterans for all your scarifies to make sure we can live in peace and harmony, well done faithful servants.

“The spirit of community service is alive and well in the minds of our students, even though they are far away from home but their actions speak louder than words.

“They are carrying the good name of their school, parents, villages, districts and the government of American Samoa.

“The mission is now, be safe, be respectful and be responsible.”

Doug also reports that the hot weather is beginning to wear out the performers. Three students were taken to the hospital for a check up just as a precautionary measure.  They are all doing okay.

Our military men and women on Guam, Toa o Samoa, covered the medical costs for the students.
