Hurricane Victor Makes the Seas Rise

Hurricane Victor’s high surf covered roads with rocks, sand and debris washed up by the ferocious seas yesterday.

Red Cross officials say some families living close to the beach in Vaitogi were evacuated yesterday as their homes were threatened by the powerful seas.

Some vehicles stopped before they got to the part of the road directly facing the Fatu ma Futi rock upon seeing the waves crashing beyond the mountain side of the road.

There were no ASG clean up crews when KHJ News arrived at the scene

Villagers, mainly young people with rakes, shovels and other cleaning tools cleared the debris and made the roads passable for vehicles.

Private property also suffered from the rising seas.

A homeowner in Fogagogo said part of her seawall was torn down by the waves and damage was caused to her property,

Other road damage occurred in parts of the eastern side.

waves SaturdayThe National Weather Service also received reports about roads in Manu’a being inaccessible because they were submerged in water and debris.

Despite warnings to the public to stay away from the water as Hurricane Victor would generate surf of up to 25 feet, there were children and adults seen swimming at Utulei Beach.
