On this first working day of the Third Regular Session of the 34th Legislature, resolutions for the confirmation of the governor’s nominees for the Board of Directors of the American Samoa Visitors Bureau were introduced.

The ASVB Board has had only two active members for a long time: Chairman Roy J.D.Hall Jr, and Alex Sene Jr.

The new nominees are Deputy Director of Commerce Uili Leauanae, Deputy Secretary of Samoan Affairs Tuiagamoa Tavai, Hawaiian
Airline’s Station Manager, Tuli Fruean and owners of tourism related businesses J.D Hall Jr., Tom Drabble and Betty Cavanaugh.
Leauanae, Tavai and Hall Jr, are nominated for 2 year terms while the rest will be serving for 3 years.

Governor Lolo said in his letter of nomination that under local law, the 7th member should represent the National Park Service, however under federal law, this is not allowable.

In due course, he said he will be submitting to the Fono a bill to amend Section 17.0612 to allow a seventh member from the community to sit on the board.

Lolo said each nominee either represents the requisite government department or a sector of the tourism industry in American Samoa.
And collectively, they will bring years of capable and successful experience to the Visitors Bureau.

The House Government Operations Committee chaired by Rep. Faimealelei Anthony Allen will hold a confirmation hearing for the new board members 8am Thursday.
