Election Office Prepares for Voting Day Nov 8

There have been no announcements of candidates running for the gubernatorial, congressional and House of Representatives elections in November.

But the Election Office is making preparations for when the voters go to the polls on November 8th.

About 16,000 voters have already registered at the Election Office.

This number includes about 400 new voters who registered after the last elections.

Chief Election Officer, Uiagalelei Dr. Lealofi Uiagalelei explained that since 2014, the names of 1,800 registered voters have been purged from the voter roll.

This includes those who have passed away and voters who have not cast ballots in the last two elections.

The Election Office encouraging those who are 18 but haven’t registered to vote to come to the Election Office in Tafuna and register.

The office is open for registration from 8:00am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday.

The Election Office will release nominating petitions for those intending to run for public office on June 30th.

The deadline to return the filled petitions is September 1st.

The Chief Election Officer weighed in on the possibility that the current administration may run unopposed.

Uiagalelei, said that it is too early to tell.

Although it’s unusual that up to now there have not been any official announcement of teams contesting the gubernatorial election, he says there’s still ample time and anything can happen.
