Bill for Fono Pay Raises Clears House, 13-4

It’s now up to senators whether or not to approve the House bill for salary increases for lawmakers in the 35th legislature.

This morning, the bill was approved in final reading by the House of Representatives by a vote of 13-4.

Those who opposed the legislation are Larry Sanitoa, Vailoata Amituanai, Vui Florence Saulo and Maugaoalii Sipa Anoa’i.

Lawmakers who voted for the bill are Speaker Savali Talavou Ale, Vice Speaker Fetu Fetui, Representatives Timusa Lam Yuen, Puletu Dick Koko, Wayne Manumaua, Vesi Fautanu, Toeaina Faufano, Vaetasi Tuumolimoli Moliga, Faimealelei Anthony Allen, the bill’s sponsor, Meauta Mageo, Vaeaitu Maluia, Atalina Asifoa and Puleleiite Tufele Jr.

The salaries of the Speaker and Senate President would be raised from $30,000 to $50,000, the pay of representatives and senators jumps from $25,000 to $45,000 and that of the Swains Island faipule will be hiked from $20,000 to $40,000.
