A word of caution about falling rocks and other debris from mountain sides along the high way during heavy rains.

Ite Matagia of the M&O Division of Public Works says they have responded to minor landslides in the last week, during and following heavy rains.

He says from Utulei to Nu’uuli and from Amaluia all the way to the western end of the island, as well as parts of the Eastern District,  rocks, trees and debris have slid from on top mountain ridges or the mountain sides onto the highway.

Matagia says luckily no cars or pedestrians have been on the road during the landslides causing injuries or even fatalities.

Some of the areas in which such land slides have occurred are  Onenoa, Faganeanea, Fatumafuti, Failolo and Amaluia.

Matagia says people should be aware of the possibility of landslides when they are driving near mountain sides.
