Amata Helps Raise funds for Coleman Elementary

Congresswoman Aumua Amata was the keynote speaker at a Po Siva or night of entertainment to support the Uifaatali Peter Coleman Elementary School in Pago Pago.

The school was renamed in honor of the congresswoman’s father in recognition of his long and dedicated service to the people of American Samoa.

In her remarks which were entirely in the Samoan language, Aumua recounted some of her father’s history and urged parents, teachers and students to support their school.

Born in Pago Pago, Peter Coleman graduated from Saint Louis School in Honolulu, Hawaii and later joined the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of captain during World War II.

Peter Tali ColemanHe received his law degree from Georgetown University, and served in American Samoa both as a public defender and as the territory’s attorney general.

Coleman was appointed governor of American Samoa in 1956 by President Dwight Eisenhower.

In 1977, Coleman became the first popularly elected governor of American Samoa.

He was subsequently elected in 1980 and 1988.

After her speech, the congresswoman took to the stage and opened the po siva during which members of the audience joined in and donated to the PTA.

Aumua Amata thanked all the parents, teachers and students for their tremendous support for the school and the PTA.
