The District Director of Congresswoman Aumua Amata’s District Office, former house Representative Pulu Ae Ae Jr, told residents of the Alataua district that they should charge repairs for fixing their vehicles due to the bad roads in their district to the government.

He says there’s a law that allows them t do this,

Pulu was responding to complaints voiced by a handful of Alataua residents who attended Congresswoman Aumua Amata’s townhall meeting in Leone last Thrusday,

Pulu advised the group to get a mechanic to do an estimate of the damages and a detailed report and to take this to the Attorney General’s Office.

While road conditions are a local issue, Pulu said he feels the frustration of the people of Alataua with the unpaved and pothole riddled road conditions of unpaved and pothole-riddled roads.

The former faipule advised the Alataua residents that if their representative doesn’t do any work for their district, then they should just vote him out.

He said the faipule are fighting to raise their salaries while there are more important things they need to do for their districts.

One Alataua resident who voiced his concerns, Ene Taifane alluded to Congresswoman Aumua Amata’s opening remarks where she said that what is desirable to those in Washington should also apply be desirable to American Samoa residents.

He said Alataua residents are like second class citizens going by the conditions of the roads in their district.

Taifane told the congresswoman that the people of Alataua have been enslaved for many years, spending a lot of money to fix their cars because of the bad roads.

He understands this is a local issue but the people of Alataua don’t have any hope in and are not looking to the American Samoa Government for help.

amata leone 2Taifane did not once mention or acknowledge their representative who happens to be the Speaker of the House and the longest serving member of the American Samoa Legislature, Savali Talavou Ale.

Congresswoman Aumuia Amata said in response to Taifane’s request that she will seek help from her colleagues for possible funding for the Alataua road.

Other issues that were brought up at the congresswoman’s townhall meeting were veterans’ needs, senior citizens food vouchers and the JROTC Program .
