The Department of Commerce is letting business owners know that the grace period for them to renew and pay for their business licenses for 2016 comes to and end January 31st.

Beginning February 2nd DOC staff will be checking on business establishments to see if they have valid licenses ro operate.

All businesses are required to display a copy of their 2016 business license in a place that’s visible on their premises.

Those found operating without a license will be subject to a $2 fine for every day after December 31 that their business is opened.

Saeu Porotesano, Administrative Assistant in the Business Licensing Division of DOC says after January 31st.

Any business that has not renewed their license should no longer be opened.

She said any business that’s still operating will be issued a notice of violation and given ten days to obtain a 2016 business license.

If they don’t comply, DOC will refer them to the Attorney General’s Office for prosecution.

4,000 business licenses were issued last year according to DOC.

As of this morning DOC recorded only 2,300 applications and of that amount the majority had yet to pay for their licenses.

The business license fees were increased in June.
