A Flurry of Activity as Territory Awaits TC Amos

Tropical Storm Amos is currently 250 nautical miles north west of Pago Pago moving north eastward over the last few hours, shifting it closer to Samoa.

Amos is still forecast to come within 90 miles of American Samoa between tomorrow night and Sunday morning.

A ridge over Tutuila and Manu’a is tugging at Amos and the possibility exists that Tutuila, Aunuu and Manu’a will not be in Amos’ path.

Still, the National Weather Service says we can expect to fees hurricane force winds , despite the distance of Amos from land.

The Executive Office Building was crowded for most of the day with lines of people waiting to get their tax refunds.

Lines were long at the Bank of Hawaii and ANZ and KHJ News received reports that the banks ran out of the large currencies, like $50 and $100 bills and was dispersing $5 and $1 notes and even $10 quarter rolls. The banks closed at 1pm.

After 1 pm traffic heading to the west was backed up from Avau to Fatu ma Futi, as workers headed home and recipients of refund checks headed to buy hurricane supplies.

Most of the hardware store and popular supermarkets were full.

This afternoon pick up trucks with plywood, roofing iron and tarps were seen driving in the rain.

The sounds of people hammering boards on windows and nailing down roofing iron were heard.

The Emergency Operations Center was fully activated at around 2:30 this afternoon and the nerve center of media information regarding Amos, and response to any incidents that would occur, is now manned 24/7 by ASG personnel and first responders.

Public Works official Ete Matagia said the only incident they responded to today was the knee deep water that accumulated near the construction site of the new Argosy University campus.

A rundown of places and events that are closed due to the approaching cyclone.

The Fagatogo marketplace will close at 6pm and will remain closed tomorrow.

Neil’s Ace Home Center will close tomorrow.

Same for GHC Reid companies in Tafuna. These stores will reopen Monday.

There will be no dialysis treatment tomorrow but if patients experience any emergencies call EMS, police or EOC.

All high school sports set for today and tomorrow have been pushed to Monday.

Hawaiian Air’s flight tonight will arrive and depart as scheduled.

Polynesian Airlines was still operating flights to Manu’a and Apia today however there were some delays. Flights for tomorrow would be dependent on weather conditions.
