Update on MV Sili Damage

The MV Sili damaged its starboard rudder and propeller in an accident at Faleasao Harbor last week.

It was earlier reported that while the MV SILi was docked at Faleasao Harbor, strong wave action lifted the vessel and slammed it down hard on the ocean floor.

However the incident report that Port Administration management has received indicates that the damage occurred as the Sili was entering the Faleasao Channel, at around 11-12 pm last Thursday.

Pictures taken of the damage confirm that the starboard rudder and propeller were bent.

It was thought at the time that the damage was minimal and the boat left Manu’a with passengers to return to Tutuila.

However the engine began to vibrate badly and the boat was forced to return to shore, dropped off the passengers then continued to Tutuila with just cargo.

Port Administration says the MV Sili is to be pulled up the slipway at the Satala shipyard -and inspected for damages.

The shipyard is hoping to have an available slot to pull the Sili up later this week.
