Agents from the US Fish and Wildlife Service are on island to conduct informational and public hearings regarding a proposal to include local birds, snails and bat species on the US Endangered Species list.

The birds being proposed for protection include the friendly ground dove and the ma’o.

Also on the pending list are the Pacific sheath-tailed bat and the sisi snail and the Tutuila tree snail .

Biologist James Kwon says the informational and public hearings are an opportunity for the local community to understand and be part of the decision making to having these species officially listed as endangered so they can be protected.

The informational meeting is from 2-3 pm where members of the public are given the opportunity to ask any question and express any concerns.

And the public hearing is from 3-5 pm where those attending can express their opinions orally or in writing concerning the listing of these species.

The venue for both hearings is the Lee Auditorium.
