Purse Seiners Head to Eastern Pacific Waters

The majority of US purse seiners that normally deliver their catch to the two canneries are leaving Pago Pago for the eastern Pacific.

Many have been tied up at the main dock or the cannery docks since last month unable to go out fishing because they no longer have licneses to fish in the Western and Central Pacific.

While they are idled, the crews are not earning any money.

Most of the fishing boats leave later this week to fish in the eastern Pacific with hopes that the US will be able to reach a new fishing agreement with Pacific island countries soon.

GUIDIKHJ News spoke with Louis Guidi of the purse seiner Sea Encounter about their situation.
