No Water for Lepuapua for Several Hours

Residents of Lepuapua were without water for several hours from Saturday night to Sunday morning, disrupting preparations for Sunday church services and to’anai.

And if not having running water wasn’t bad enough, residents said when they called ASPA to report the outage they were put off by the response.

A grandmother in charge of two households with a lot of teenagers and young children said the person on duty told her don’t call again, that they’ve been bombarded with calls about the Lepuapua water outage, several other people had already reported it.

The woman said others in their neighborhood said the response from ASPA was rude and disrespectful… as if they didn’t care about the long hours their households didn’t have water.

Asked about the outage, Executive Director Utu Abe Malae said the proximate cause of Lepuapua not getting any water supply was the Leone tank draining sooner than expected—that water tank serves Lepuapua, part of Malaeloa and Leone to Amanave.

The tank drained sooner than expected because the Malaeloa well tripped from an electrical fault on the power system, said Utu.

He explained this is also the area where the water mains are being replaced because of failure from old age.

KHJ News asked the Executive Director for his reaction about the response from ASPA’s Customer Service as reported by the Lepuapua residents.

Utu said appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.
