Almost two weeks after a man’s body was found hanging from a tree on the road leading to the Aute Sports Club which turns off the main road in Futiga and goes inland to Nalaeloa, police have yet to determine whether or not the death was self inflicted.

Commissioner of Public Safety Save Liuato Tuitele said yesterday that for now the case is being treated as a homicide.

He says several people are being interviewed but up to yesterday the investigation had not pinpointed if the man committed suicide or whether foul play was involved.

The victim is identified as Kennedy Sasala, who was recently released from jail after serving time for stealing,.

One family member has told friends that they don’t believe this was a suicide.

Responding to questions about an assault which occurred recently at the Department of Homeland Security, the commissioner says a report has been completed and is being forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office.

He said the report recommends that the alleged perpetrator be criminally charged.

Retired US Army Major Malologa Lagai is the target of a police complaint by Deputy Director of Homeland Security Jacinta Brown.

He’s alleged to have made threatening remarks to Brown and attempted to assault her.

Since the incident, Lagai has been off island reportedly for medical appointments and his desk at Homeland Security has been cleared indicating he will not be returning there.

Co workers say he is reported to be moving to the Governor’s Office under instructions from Lt. Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga.
