The Native American Samoa Advisory Council has had success in teaching young people native trees and plants which our ancestors used as medicine, and how to grow fruits and vegetables organically.

At leased property in Pava’ia’i where the NASAC office, classroom and lab are now situated, one can find turmeric or lega, the lagaali, moega lo or lemon grass, and a host of other medicinal plants.

One can also find basil, asparagus, egg plants and even strawberries.

Tilani Ilaoa who heads NASAC said a 3-year youth project that has now ended demonstrated that it’s not enough to tell the children about the nutritional and healing values of native plants and trees, fruits and vegetables.

It’s a must to demonstrate and give them a taste of what they grow over a period of time.
