The LBJ Hospital Eye Clinic now has a machine to perform cataract surgery.

It was donated by the Lions Club of Pago Pago and presented yesterday to the Eye Clinic by Lions Club President Tafa Tua-Tupuola and Director Lion Larry Sanitoa to the hospital yesterday.

Ms Tupuola says the “Phaco” machine was a donation by Alcon Laboratories who’ve contributed many of their supplies  and materials to support Lions Club Eye Care activities.

The President of the Lions Club says the generous donation was made possible through the coordination of Dr. Mitchell Brinks of Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and Dr. Ben Siatu’u of LBJ who reached out to the Lions Club of Pago Pago for assistance.

Dr. Brinks has assisted with the Lions Club Eye Care projects in the past and donated his expertise to perform several eye surgeries which have helped people see better.

The value of the Phaco machine is more than $100,000 and Island Cargo Support and CSL covered  shipment of the equipment.
