The governor spoke about the demonstration by the United Citizens of American Samoa at today’s cabinet meeting.

Governor Lolo Moliga said the protest was not a bad thing, rather its an indication that our people are able to exercise their constitutional rights and freedoms.

The community group, United Citizens of American Samoa, today held their second protest against the bill to increase the salaries of lawmakers by $20,000.

Their first demonstration was held on Tuesday.

The governor‘s comments were prompted by advice from Secretary of Samoan Affairs, Mauga Tasi Asuega, in his role as a cultural and fatherly figure pertaining to the public uproar about current issues and problems in the government.

Mauga said the traditional leaders cannot remain silent while these events are happening… they must give advice to the governor.

He stressed the need to explain to the people the status of government finances and some of the current projects which the administration has planned.

Governor Lolo said when he went past the demonstration in front of the Fono, the scene was “somehow foreign as we are not used to such events.”

He said the group was exercising freedoms that veterans have fought to protect and defend.

Lolo said it’s also the desire of our forefathers and ancestors, for these freedoms to be protected.

He said the protest will only become a problem if it’s not carried out in a civilized manner.

The governor also commented that the Samoan culture is still in tact and is not affected by the group of concerned citizens exercising their rights.

He also wanted to point out that the executive branch does not interfere with the work of the Fono.
