Football Bug Bites NZ

A historic football match between American Samoa and New Zealand in June is shaping up nicely.

The American Samoa National Football Federation which is organizing the encounter has received positive response since news of the match was first announced prior to Flag Day.

Sports Commissioner Ethan Lake says the New Zealand teams will arrive June 2 on an Air New Zealand Airbus charter that will fly directly from Auckland.

There will be two games scheduled for June 4th.

One will be an under 19 match and the second match will be for 19 and over teams.

The visitors will depart the territory June 6th.

A New Zealand travel agent that was here with officials of the New Zealand Football Federation earlier this month to check out hotels, restaurants, stores and places that the teams can hang out, said there are more than 80 in the group and they are looking for travelers both in New Zealand and American Samoa to fill up the plane.

Those interested can contact Sports Commissioner Ethan Lake at the Department of Youth and Women Affairs or Oceania Travel at the Lumana’i Building.

Meanwhile Lake is calling a meeting of those interested in coaching our two teams to play the New Zealanders.

The meeting is tomorrow at 12 noon at Island Pizza in Tafuna.
