Food Prices Drop 2.8 Percent in December

There was a 2.8 percent drop in the Monthly Basic Food Index for American Samoa at the end of last month.

The latest stats from the Department of Commerce show that the Basic Food Index for December registered at 99.7 points, compared to 102.5 points in November, a drop of 2.8%.

The Statistics Division of DOC says the cost of a 22 lb box of chicken legs was reduced by half since January, 2015.

In some stores, a case of chicken legs is selling for $8.95.

Also contributing to the drop in the Basic Food Index for December , according to DOC, was lower prices for rice, ramen saimin, sausage, turkey tails, sugar and soy sauce.

Lamb flaps is also included in the list but mamoe lovers have seen a steady increase in the price of lamb flaps in the last two years.

Only two food items in the food basket that’s used to measure the monthly food index, cereal and eggs, went up in price.

Food items whose prices did not change between November and December are bread, corned beef, canned tuna fresh milk, soda, vegetable oil and taro.
