Fagatogo faipule laments lack of playcourts for Fagatogo
Fagatogo faipule Maugaoali'i Leapai Sipa Anoa'i is pushing for a playground and basketball and volleyball courts to be constructed in his district.
According to the lawmaker, the demands of government and the private sector for land in Fagatogo have resulted in the youth being “forced...to
play in between buildings on the streets and in the stream banks.”
He adds that there was a playground and cricket field where the Fagatogo Square now stands, and there has been no effort by government officials to designate an area to replace the loss of the village's recreational facilities.
Maugaoali'i is behind a resolution introduced yesterday calling on the director of Parks and Recreation to reassess and complete the construction of
recreational facilities for the youth of Fagatogo.
Maugaoali'i said new basketball and volleyball courts plus a playground were included in the Tauese-Togiola administration's New Urban Redevelopment Plan for Fagatogo. All the phases for the plan, including building a pavilion in Fagatogo, are now in place but not the recreational
facilities.
He also said that $87,000 in community block grant funding was earmarked for the Fagatogo redevelopment and he calls on Parks and Recreation to move forward on construction.
The resolution has been assigned to the House Committee on Public Works and Parks and Rec for review.
