Legislation that would  allow foreign students primarily from Asian countries to enroll in tertiary education in American Samoa has been introduced in the Fono.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Galeai Tu’ufuli, allows approved private schools in the territory to sponsor non immigrant foreign students while they attend classes.

After the students complete their studies they must return home or continue their education at schools in the US.

This law begins a knowledge based economy in American Samoa.

Students must have a housing contract, private medical insurance and show proof of ability to pay tuition fees and expenses.

Students may not bring spouses or children and they are not allowed to work while they are in school.

This is not the first time that such a bill has been introduced in the Fono.
