Thursday’s Zoning Board hearing on a variance for the community swimming pool project in Tafuna allowed the applicant, Rotary Club of Pago Pago, government agencies and private citizens to present views and concerns before the board.

Board members present were Chairman Filifaatali Mike Fuiava, Rep. Leapai Sipa Anoa’i, Marie Lafaele, Lawrence French, Aitofele Sunia and Toilolo.

The Rotary Club of Pago Pago was represented by President Utu Abe Malae, Steve Watson and other members.

According to Watson, the need for a variance is unclear since the location is in Lions Park and the project is an added park feature.

Watson said they are prepared to address that issue.

Rotary President Utu said the minimum distance required by the Federal Aviation Administration between the new site for the airport fuel tanks and the pool is 500 feet and measurements need to be precise.

The actual distance is 450 feet and it was agreed that an adjustment can be made.

Jim McGuire, who raised initial objections to the location of the swimming pool, stated the plan was initially to build an Olympic-size pool but that’s not what the applicant is building.

Rotary Club president Utu said plans had to be adjusted.

All questions and comments related to the variance for the swimming pool must be submitted to the Zoning Board in writing and the deadline is within 7 calednar days, after which the board will make its final decision.

This is the second time that the Rotary swimming pool project is being reviewed by the Zoning Board.

Zoning Board issued a variance for the pool last June however McGuire objected on behalf of the Tafuna Residents Association that the board did not have a quorum at the meeting where approval was given and that the Zoning Board record was missing a submission he made objecting to the location.
