$500 to register a matai title under proposed hikes

Significant increases are proposed for fees currently charged by the Office of the Territorial Registrar for registration of matai titles, land, leases and other services offered by this office.

As required under the Administrative Procedures Act, a notice of intended action has been issued by Attorney General Talauega Eleasalo Ale.

The Office of the Territorial Registrar is a division of the Attorney General’s Office.

According to the proposed fee schedule, the fee for land registration and or a letter of objection to any matai title registration shall be $500. The current fee is $5.

Registration of land which is now $12 will be increased to $100.

For a deed registration, now $5, the new fee will be $100.

The fee for registering a land lease, or house lease will be $100.

A separation agreement would cost $100. The fee for filing and recording any mortgage, lien or bank note or release and other documents of this nature will be $100.

The fee for performing research using office records is $50 per request.

That’s the same charge for executing a Registrar Affidavit and for all miscellaneous items.

A fee for registering a trademark is $10 and the fee for a certified copy of a document shall be $5.

A copy of the proposed fees may be picked up from the Office of the Territorial Registrar in Fagatogo between 7:30am and  4 pm.

Those wishing to comment on the proposed fees must present their views in writing no later than 4 pm by October 1st.

All written views must be received by the Territorial Registrar no later than October 1st.
