Complaints from residents and those using the Veterans Memorial Stadium about the stench and smoke from the asphalt plant continue to mount.

McConnell Dowell has been operating its asphalt plant for the airport paving project.

Residents living behind the stadium say they can hardly breath when the fumes and dust are carried to their homes.

One resident said their windows are covered with thick dark dust whenever an asphalt plant is operating.

Residents say they have called ASEPA but have been told that the operators, McConnell and Paramount, have permits.

The residents have also pressed for some action from their lawmakers.

Last week, Rep Sam Meleisea asked that the asphalt plant impacts on residents in the area, be added to the list of issues that Director of Port Administration has to address at a hearing tomorrow.

Meanwhile McConnell Dowell’s Project Manager Stuart Pilat said in response to KHJ News enquiries, that their plant does not pollute nor put out harmful chemicala.

He said the white smoke that their asphalt plant emits is effectively steam as the plant has a built in scrubbing facility which removes any pollutants.

He added that their emissions are tested and fall within stipulated guidelines of the Environmental Protection Agency.
