The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services has approved American Samoa Medicaid’s request to allow reimbursement of Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics and Medical Supplies (DMEPOS) if prescribed by a physician.

This new benefit will improve the quality of life especially for senior citizens in need of wheelchairs, the disabled population whom need prosthetics and even those who need CPAP machines.

A press statement says the American Samoa Medicaid State Agency prioritized Governor Lolo Moliga’s request to reform and update the American Samoa Medicaid State Plan starting with making the Department of Health’s community health centers a Medicaid provider, designing the off-island referral program to New Zealand and providing durable medical equipment for senior citizens and the disabled population.

A patient who needs a DMEPOS must have a prescription from a physician to submit to the Medicaid office for prior authorization for Medicaid reimbursement.
