Leone & Asili choir wins Diocesan competition

The Leone Holy Cross Parish combined with the choir from Saints Peter and Paul, Asili representing the Western  Zone took first place honors in the Diocesan Choir Competition Saturday.

The Festival to honor Mary the Mother of God was held at the Fatuoaiga Hall.

Seven choirs representing the different zones of the local Diocese competed in the event which was intiated by Bishop Peter Brown to bring together the music ministers and choirs and to lift the level of choirs in friendly competition.

The judges were Deacon Falaniko Tamiano from the Diocese of Samoa-Apia, noted choir director and conductor Dr. Julia Fo’ifua of the Fagatogo CCJS and Leota Mapusone, a composer from Nuuuli.

The contest hymn, Ave Maria, was composed by Fr. Eneliko Auvaa with the help of his brother, pianist and composer, Lose Auvaa.

Second place went to the Parish of Immaculate Conception of Lepua and Leloaloa, from the Eastern Zone and the 3rd place went to the choir of St. Paul consisting of Alao, Laulii and Sailele parishes, also representing the Eastern Zone.

Congresswoman Aumua Amata and Miss American Samoa/Miss Pacific Islands Matauaina Toomalatai were among the audience of priests, deacons, catechists and parishioners who packed the Fatuoaiga Hall for the competition.
