Task Force to review chemicals & fertilizers

There’s concern that chemicals and fertilizers entering the territory are posing a threat to the land as well as to the health of residents.

This has prompted Governor Lolo Moliga to set up a Chemical Review Task Force to review chemicals and fertilizers entering the territory to ensure that what’s coming in meets federal regulations as well as local laws.

The task force is also tasked with determining if there’s legal justification to stop the entry of fertilizers and chemicals that are deemed harmful.

In his memo establishing the group the governor said, “Our inability to determine what is being injected into the land and possible health hazard effects on our people is unacceptable and disconcerting.”

Director of Agriculture Filifaatali Mike Fuiava is appointed chairman of the Chemical Review Task Force.
Members are: Acting EPA Director-Faamao Asalele Jr, Deputy Treasurer-Keith Gebauer, Muliagatele Gus Godinet of Port Administration, Acting Director of Commerce-Uili Leauanae, Deputy Director of Health-Papalii Marion Fitisemanu, Chief Immigration Officer-Peseta Dennis Lutu and Governor’s Deputy Legal Counsel-Alema Leota.

The group has 90 days to submit a report to the governor and lt governor with recommendations on steps to prevent the importation of illegal chemical and fertilizers.
