Residents turning up at the Pago Pago Post Office to pick up packages have been unpleasantly surprised when told they have to show IDs and if their ID doesn’t match the name on the package it will not be released to them.

One man couldn’t uplift a package that was addressed to his wife even though he had been able to do so for the past many years.

A woman who went to uplift a package yesterday said even after she showed her ID, the Post Office nearly didn’t release her package because the name didn’t exactly match the name that was on her ID.

According to information from the Post Office, the postal workers who’re asking for IDs are from Honolulu who don’t know the owners of Post Office boxes who regularly come in to uplift mail not just for themselves but for their relatives.

The Honolulu employees are believed to be here temporarily to relieve regular employees of the Pago Pago Post Office who are on leave.

One Post Office employees told KHJ News the Honolulu workers just want to make sure they are releasing packages to the right people and this is nothing new.

The employee also pointed out that there are signs posted at the doors at the lobbies for customers to present IDs when picking up packages.

One irate customer wrote on Face Book however, “Can’t even pick up mail addressed to your spouse at the Post Office now.  Thank you to the many thieves and idiots who smuggled drugs through the mail, now the Post Office has more security protocols than Fort Knox.”
