Director of Education, Dr Ruth Matagi-Tofiga, says the American Samoa Department of Education is grieving for the Tuileto’a and Toese family “that is experiencing what no parent should experience…the loss of a child.”

A press release from the Director regarding the tragic drowning of Pavaiai Elementary 8th grader, Tinian Makewijere Tuileto’a Toese at the Pala Lagoon Swimming Center last Wednesday says, “The parents expect their child to be safe while in our care. This is just a real tragic situation.”

Dr. Matagi Tofiga said DOE is revisiting off campus and field trip activities to maximize educational benefits and ensure the safety and protection of students.

She added they are also addressing the role of the teachers in providing competent instruction and supervision for off campus activities.

The director welcomes the investigation by the Department of Public Safety and said DOE is also conducting interviews concerning the incident.

Dr Matagi Tofiga assured, “We will take as long as needed to get all the answers, before disciplinary action will be taken.”

According to the director, the principal and staff of Pava’ia’i Elementary School performed the traditional ifoga or ceremony of reconciliation to Tinian’s family.

She also also met personally with the parents and grandfather and offered her condolences.

She concluded, “Our deepest sympathy is extended to the parents, grandparents, extended family and loved ones. I ask the Community to please to keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.”
