Congresswoman Aumua has given her position regarding the Trump administration’s separation of children from their parents at the border.

She said,”Children are gifts from God. Our national immigration policies should seek to preserve, protect and encourage the family unit as much as possible, so I support keeping families together as much as possible during the stages of the immigration or asylum process consistent with existing law.

It’s estimated that at least 2,000 children have been separated from their parents as a result of the administration’s family separation policy.

The congresswoman said, “Putting the best interests of the child first is mine and my colleagues’ guiding principle as Congress reviews the policy options in this immigration debate. Changes to our immigration processes should protect all families to the greatest extent practical.”

Aumua was optimistic that an amicable solution will be achieved.

She said, I’m encouraged by the efforts of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle proposing solutions to insure the safety and protection of all those impacted by our immigration laws and look forward to helping shape revisions over the coming weeks that will hopefully lead to positive substantive changes.”
