McDonald’s American Samoa awards $36,000 in scholarships

McDonald’s American Samoa is enabling another group of students to attain higher education.

Four high school graduates and one from the American Samoa Community College were today awarded McDonald’s American Samoa scholarships for the 2018-2019 academic year.

The ASCC graduate is Anastasia Magalo who will be studying tropical plant science and Agroecology at the University of Hawaii Hilo.

The daughter of Talalelei and Matagi Magalo of Petesa was awarded a scholarship of $20,000.

The four high school seniors received scholarships of $4,000 each to study at the American Samoa Community College.

They are:

  •  Angel Amosa of Tafuna High School , the daughter of Venetta and David Amosa of Vaitogi who is studying nursing
  • Aumaluoaiga Masunu of Manumalo High School, the daughter of Yolanda Masunu of Tafuna, studying marine scene.
  • Catherine Benrnabe of Faasao Marist High School, the daughter of Roseciedo and Mariano Bernabe of Leone, who will study psychology and
  • Louisa Woo Ching of Nuuuli Poly Tech High School, daughter of Mataniu and Tavo Woo Ching of Tafuna, who will enroll in pre law studies.

McDonald’s scholarships are very competitive and each applicant must have a minimum  GPA of 3.5, SAT score of at least 1,000 and pass an extensive interview process with the Scholarship Board.

Chair of the McDonald’s Scholarship Board, Ms Dolores Tautolo, said there were over 30 applications this year and the selection was very tough.

This is the 12th year of the McDonald’s Scholarship and in that time the company has disbursed scholarships totalling $460,000 to deserving local students.
