American Samoa has yet to receive its share of the $6.5 million settlement between Starkest Company and the United States Government for environmental violations at the StarKist Samoa cannery in Satala.

American Samoa is to receive $2.6 million and a further $88,000 in emergency equipment to be used by local first responders to deal with chemical releases.

Governor Lolo Moliga told KHJ News yesterday a special account is being set up to deposit the StarKist money when its received.

And he plans to set up a committee to take charge of the spending of that money.

Attorney General Talauega Eleasalo Ale told a Senate hearing in January that this money will go to specific purposes as part of the consent agreement.

According to the governor, the committee that will oversee use of the funds will review the recommended uses of the money and if there are any not deemed priority at this time, they can be substituted for more urgent needs.

Since lawmakers returned to work Monday, there have been inquiries in both the House and Senate on whether ASG has received the StarKist payment.
