Close to 200 homes listed as destroyed

As of yesterday close to 200 homes were listed as totally destroyed by Tropical Cyclone Gita,

Discussions at the daily briefings at the Emergency Operations Center are now focused on getting families whose homes were totally destroyed out of the shelters.

As of Monday there were still 660 people from 100 families living in 11 church halls designated as emergency shelters .

Assessment teams that have been scouring the island documenting losses and damages to homes and government buildings and infrastructure are handing in their reports which will be used in the request for a presidential declaration of American Samoa as a disaster area.

Red Cross is using the assessment reports by EOC to identify families who need urgent help, and the priority is those whose homes were destroyed.

Chief Executive Officer of Red Cross San Diego/Municipal Counties, Sean Mahoney explains the process for getting Red Cross assistance  to those families.
