Eight airport security officers deputized

Eight airport security officers were deputized in a ceremony this morning marking the successful completion of training to carry firearms and enforce airport security laws.

The officers underwent a year long training which covered the use of  pepper spray, baton and Glock pistols, conducted by Mr Ernest Haleck, who was with the Special Weapons And Tactics Team of the LAPD. 

The officers also received briefings on the penal code conducted by the Attorney General’s Office.

Port Director Taimalelagi Dr. Claire Poumele congratulated the deputized officers and commended them for persevering in the training.

Commissioner of Public Safety Le’i Sonny Thompson who deputized the eight officers stressed the importance of their work in protecting the public and visitors at the airport.

The role of the Airport Police Service is to prevent, detect and respond to all criminal acts occurring at the airport.

Attending the ceremony was Director of Homeland Security Samana Semo Veavea, Airport Manager Tavita Fuimaono and some of the families of the officers.
