Manumalo wins top prize in fisheries exhibits

Manumalo took first place honors in the Western Pacific Fisheries Management Council’s fisheries exhibit competition last night at the Lee Auditorium.

Schools were invited to submit exhibits based on the theme:Fishing- Food, Life, Future.

The aim of the competition was to promote awareness of the significant role of fisheries in the territory and get students interested in fish related careers.

The winners were announced at the Fishers Forum held last night as part of the WPFMC meeting, being held here this week.

For their winning efforts Manumalo was awarded $600.

Samoana High School placed second, winning $400 and South Pacific Academy took the 3rd place prize money of $200 .

Other schools which entered were Kanana-fou, Nuuuli Vo Tech, Tafuna and Faasao Marist. 

All were given $100 consolation prizes and a map of the exclusive economic zone in the Pacific region.

The students and their parents milled through the various displays by Coast Guard Auxiliary, National Marine Fisheries Offices like the observer program,  Pacific Island Regional Office, StarKist Samoa, Pago Pago Gamefishing Association and American Samoa Advisory Panel to the Council,.

Students who were awarded scholarships by the Council also talked about their present careers.
