Election Commissioner Uiagalelei Dr. Lealofi Uiagalelei has set a special election for District No.5 Sua for October 24,
The election is to fill the House of Representatives vacancy for the District No 5 seat created by the resignation of Rep Puleleiite Tufele Liamatua Jr.
Puleleiite who has served more than 4 terms as Sua faipule has stepped down to devote his full attention to being Interim CEO & Chairman of the Board of the American Samoa Telecommunications Authority.
A notice issued by Uiagalelei today says that on September 1, pursuant to Article II Section 13 of the Revised Constitution of American Samoa, the governor called for a special election to fill the vacancy in the Office of Representative for District No, 5. to the House of Representatives.
On Tuesday, October 24, from 6 am to 6 pm, a special election shall be held at designated polling places for the House seat for District No. 5, for a term that will commence immediately and expire on January 3, 2019.
Uiagalelei said this also serves as notice that candidate nomination petition forms and materials for the special election are now available for pick up at the Election Office in Tafuna.
In addition, candidate nomination petitions must be filed with the Election Office no later than 4:30 p on Friday, September 22,
Voter registration for the election is now open and will close at 430 om on Monday, October 2.
The Election Commissioner also announced that their office is now accepting requests for outside absentee ballots for uniformed service voters, overseas voters and students attending institutions of learning outside of American Samoa.
The last day to request an outside absentee ballot is 4:30 pm on Tuesday, October 10.
Requests for absentee ballots, can be done online at the Election Office website at americansamoaelectionoffice.org
Uniformed service voters and overseas voters outside of the US and territories may use the Federal Post Card Application to request an absentee ballot.
