Political intrigue and turmoil continues in the Kingdom of Tonga where last week King Tupou VI dissolved Parliament leaving the elected government of Akilisi Pohiva in a caretaker role.
Kaniva News today revealed that Prime Minister Pōhiva has fired Deputy Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni and Finance Minister Tēvita Lavemaau.
It’s understood Sovaleni and Lavemaau were dismissed effective 5pm yesterday.
Pōhiva is reported to be very disappointed with the ministers, a spokesperson told Kaniva News.
The ministers were allegedly involved in a conspiracy which led to the king’s decision to dissolve the Tongan Parliament ordering fresh general elections in November.
Lord Maʻafu has been appointed the new Deputy Prime Minister while Poasi Tei is taking over Sovaleniʻs Minisitry of MEIDECC. Dr Pōhiva Tuʻiʻonetoa is the new Minister of Finance.
