Fiji to Be Invited to Join Polynesian Leaders Group

Samoa Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi will be inviting Fiji to join the Polynesian Leaders Group at next weeks Pacific Forum meeting in Apia.

In his weekly Radio 2AP interview this afternoon he said Fiji, is mainly people of the Lau group who are Polynesians so it makes sense to invite Fiji to be a member of PLG.

Fiji is a Melanesian country.

Tuilaepa, who is taking over as Chairman of the Forum next week, said there is room in the constitution of PLG to allow Fiji to join.

He also wants to invite other Polynesians in Hawaii, New Zealand and Easter Island to join.

Some tribes from indigenous groupings in New Zealand have made attempts to join the group in the past and Tuilaepa says that he hopes PLG will start to address these approaches as well.

PLG members are Tonga, Tokelau, Niue, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, American Samoa, Wallis & Futuna and Samoa.
