Members of the local Filipino Community flocked to Fagatogo Square this past weekend to take advantage of consular services provided by the Philippine Consul General based in Honolulu.

Consul General Gina Jamoralin, arrived with her team Friday night and was present for the induction of new officers for the local Filipino Community held at the Lee Auditorium Saturday evening.

Jamoralin, said in an interview with KHJ News explained  their mission.

Eight of the Consul General’s staff  helped local Filipinos renew passports, birth certificates and registration.

Other consular services provided relate to immigration issues, such as citizens who endure a long time for immigration ID cards from the American Samoa Immigration Office.

Consul General Jamoralin said they also assist citizens in distress.

While here the staff visited a Filipino citizen incarcerated at the Territorial Correctional Facility.

Last year, they helped  a Filipino family make arrangements to repatriate the body of a family member who died here, back to the Philippines.

Jamoralin says it’s expensive to travel either to Honolulu or the Philippines to get these documents.

The nearest Philippine consulate is in Wellington, New Zealand.

The Consul General and her staff return to Honolulu tonight.
