Police stops burial of man who set himself on fire

Police in Samoa have apparently stopped the burial of a man who died after setting himself on fire.

Talamua on line quoted police spokesperson, Superintendent Sala’a Sale Sala’a saying the incident happened June 30, 2017 and the victim died July 9th at Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital.

Sala’a said a stop order has been issued to the family to stop the burial until a thorough investigation into the cause of death is completed.

Talamua reports the matter was not reported to police but an investigation was started after information about the incident reached the police.

The deceased was a 41-year-old male from the Safata district. His name was not disclosed.

Sala’a said the victim’s family told police that they were shocked to see a body ablaze walking towards them.

According to the police spokerman, the family rushed in to help the deceased and brought him to the hospital.

An autopsy would be conducted to confirm the cause of death.
