A form of diabetes that women contract at pregnancy, Gestational Diabetes, is the subject of a film that is written, directed and produced by a local film maker Fepuleai Micah Van Der Ryn.

Fepuleai heads the Health and Research Communication Division of the Agriculture Community and Natural Resources Division of the American Samoa Community College.

The film documents research on gestational diabetes among women in American Samoa and Samoa.

The research, conducted by Dr. Nicola Hawley of  Yale University’s School of Public Health and Dr. Bethel Muasau Howard of LBJ’s OBGYN Clinic, shows that about 30% of pregnant women in the territory contract gestational diabetes,

Fepuleai’s film is intended to help promote awareness about this illness so that pregnant mothers can protect themselves.
