Chief Medical Officer at the LBJ Hospital, Dr. Iotamo Saleapaga, has confirmed that all of the hospital wards are full.

Dr. Salaepaaga says many people, particularly the elderly catch the flu and they don’t look after themselves or seek medical attention until they are too sick and have to be admitted.

The CMO didn’t want to comment when asked if patients are making use of the community clinics like Tafuna. Leone, Mapusaga and Amouli.

According to Dr. Salaeapaga the ward with the highest number of patients was the Medical Ward.

He confirmed that patient beds have been placed in a room where medial equipment and supplies were stored, because there were so many admissions and not enough beds.

Dr. Saleapaga said the situation seemed to be easing now and there may be a few beds available, though he didn’t have the census of inpatients.

The Chief Medical Officer advises residents to take care of their health…if they catch the flu to stay home and rest, and not wait till their illness gets worse before they see the doctor.
