Chief Customs Officer, Moetulu’i Fuiava Sipili has assured that no one will be exposed to any radiation from the customs scanner.

Senate President Pro Temp, Nuanuaolefeagaiga Saoluaga Nua informed Moetului that several senators have been told that not only do the scanners emit radiation, once the machines are in use all operations on the dock will be halted.

At a hearing of the Senate Budget and Appropriations and Human Resources Committee Moetului assured they have a plan to address those concerns.

They will be able to use the machine without causing any harm to anyone and any property at the wharf.

Customs has allocated a portion of the wharf, about 134-164 feet , and sealed it off for the container scanner.

This section of the wharf will be sealed off when the machines are charged.

Moetului  confidently testified there are two ways they can operate the machine without exposing humans to radiation from it.

First, the machine is turned off while vehicles pass through it or the vehicles will line up and the machine will scan them.

Moetulu’i told the committee that it only takes a minute for the machine to check a vehicle.

Anyone who crosses the boundry line while the machine is on ,is automatically noticed by the machine operator.

The scanner, according to Moetulu’i, can penetrate 12 inches of metal and anything inside the containers will be detected.

He declared that no object can be concealed from the container scanner.

The customs chief related a detection by container scanners he observed during training in Guam where part of a wooden pallet was carved and drugs hidden in the carved area then covered over just like it was not tampered with.

Moetulu’i said the hidden contraband didn’t go pass the scanner without detection.
