It wasn’t just football players who benefited from the literacy workshops that the team from San Francisco-based CASE Project conducted in public high schools last week.

Female athletes also took part in the workshops which encouraged students to express their feelings about themselves and their lives.

The lead educator was an award winning poet from the Bay Area, Tiresa Siagatonu.

Terisa who tours US college campuses to perform original poems and essays was awarded President Obama’s Champion of Change Award as a spoken word artist and Pacific islander community organizer.

Last year she presented before the United Nations World Conference on Climate Change.

Talking to KHJ News at the end of their week long visit, Tiresa explained that the classroom lessons they conducted were to get the students motivated to place as much importance on school work as they do in sports.
