Human & Computer Error Blamed for Exam Result Woes

Hundreds of final year students in Samoa are waiting for a recount of their exam marks.

Most of the Year 13 students scored zero for their internal assessments which could leave them short of the required marks to be able to enter the National University of Samoa.

Parents have expressed their frustration as a similar problem occurred last year.

Afamasaga Dr Karoline Fuata’i of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture has blamed it on human and computer error.

“Those areas have been resolved. We try very much to make sure we clean the data and it’s of high quality going into the software but these things are bound to happen. So it’s good to have feedback from the schools so that we’re aware of what the problems are and then we’re able to fix it,” she said.

Afamasaga Dr Karoline Fuata said the ministry had a quality assurance process.

“There’s always room for error. From the errors we then go back and look at the system and we’ve identified the sources of the problems.”
