Acting Commissioner of Public Safety Le’i Sonny Thompson says the Criminal Investigations Division has started probing yesterday’s tragic incident at the Manu’a Store compound at the Tafuna Industrial Park, which has claimed the life of one person.

Le’i told KHJ News Sunday evening that all of the information about the tragedy is preliminary until the CID investigation is completed.

A total of six men had received electric shocks and one was confirmed dead.

The acting commissioner said he was notified about the incident late and when he arrived at the scene the victims had already been transported to the hospital.

When Le’i arrived at LBJ he said one of the men had been pronounced dead and a prayer service was underway in the chapel.

The acting commissioner says two of the men were in the Intensive Care Unit while the others were stabilized in the Emergency Room.

Family members have identified the deceased as Iosefa Elia, who leaves behind a young pregnant wife, Leann Lam Yuen.

Le’i said the CID division has begun an investigation into the tragedy.

Eye witnesses said a crane lifting containers for the Manu’a Store at the Industrial Park, touched a primary power line.

The men who were on the ground, are believed to have touched the containers or the crane, and were electrocuted.

The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration is expected to conduct its own investigation of what happened.
