Lament for Palm Trees at Airport

A tree lover has recited on her social page, a poem from her high school days to lament the cutting down of palm trees which used to grace the airport, between the Samoan fale and the terminal building.

All that’s left of three groves of palm trees are 3-4 foot stumps which have been painted a cream color.

One sole palm tree is left standing,Stumps

KHJ News asked airport management who was responsible for cutting down the trees and we were told that it was Nana’s company. This is the company owned by Mrs. Fiapa’ipa’i Fruean which provides janitorial and landscaping services at the airport.

No reason was given for chopping down the palm trees.

A local resident posted photos of the palm tree stumps on her Facebook page and said,” I’m sure the sole tree that survived the massacre of the other three is singing these words of lamentation:”

I am a tree
Longing to be free
For many a century

But man in its greed
And sheer stupidity
Decided my fate
And so

Here we are
Ugly as hell
Sticking out like some nasty nude headless atrocities
Like these
MONSTROSITIES!!!

lawnAlso at the airport, KHJ News observed that the lawn in between the VIP lounge and the airport restaurant had grown tall and looked unkempt.weeds

Weeds were also crawling on the side of the VIP lounge where guests are welcomed.

According to airport management, the landscaping and janitorial contract for the airport had lapsed and it took a while to do the bidding and select a contractor.

The contract has just been awarded again to Nana’s company and a crew was mowing the lawn yesterday.
