FEMA Awards $2.4 Million to ASPA

Congresswoman Aumua Amata has announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded a grant of $2.4 million to the American Samoa Power Authority.

The grant is awarded under a Public Assistance, Category F grant for Earthquake, Tsunami, and Flooding assistance stemming from the 2009 Earthquake/Tsunami.

The Public Assistance Disaster Grant assistance program’s purpose is to enable communities to quickly respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies declared by the US President.

Category F grants are awarded to public utility entities which have suffered damage following a disaster.

Congresswoman Aumua thanked officials at FEMA for their assistance in helping American Samoa recover from one of its darkest days,.

She said, “These dollars will reimburse ASPA for damage done to their facilities during the earthquake.”

She also thanked local officials and ASPA Executive Director Utu Abe Malae for their efforts in obtaining this funding.
